vodka lemonade with strawberry + basil

I'll be the first to admit that I am no master of the bar. I'm a boring vodka tonic kind of girl. When in Naramata last weekend I decided to be a little more daring and make a pitcher of this vodka lemonade from Rue Magazine. Made with fresh basil from the garden, it made the perfect late-afternoon summer drink. It took a couple taste tests to get it just sweet and tart enough (the simple solution being to keep adding more vodka of course). I didn't have any vanilla at the cabin but I don't think a lack thereof made it any less delicious. If you find yourself lounging poolside or playing an afternoon game of croquet, I highly recommend you try this!

In a large pitcher, mix together 2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice (or roughly 10 lemons), 1 cup simple syrup, 1 1/2 cups soda water, 1/2 cup vodka, and 1/4 tsp vanilla. Fill glasses with ice and thinly sliced strawberries. Pour the lemonade mixture into the glasses and top with basil. Enjoy!
